At Redwood Landfill in Novato (resident rates, effective October 2025), the minimum is $55 per car/SUV/pickup load up to 1,000 lb, general debris is $141.41 per ton, a mattress or box spring is $67.64 each, and a non-Freon appliance is $61.38 each. Freon appliances are not accepted. You also pay for your own time, truck, fuel, and lifting.
For one or two light items near the curb, a self-haul trip to the dump can be cheaper. For anything heavy, upstairs, or more than a pickup-truck load, a flat-rate junk removal service is usually cheaper once you count truck rental, fuel, dump fees, the per-item charges, and your own time and back. A flat photo quote also removes the risk of a surprise per-ton weight at the scale.
A mattress costs $0 to recycle at a Bye Bye Mattress drop-off site, or free pickup from the retailer when you buy a new one (required by California law). At Redwood Landfill the per-item charge is $67.64. With a full-service hauler a mattress falls in the single-item tier from $125, which includes the lifting and disposal.
A washer, dryer, or heater (no Freon) is $61.38 each at Redwood Landfill. Freon appliances such as refrigerators and AC units are not accepted there and must be handled separately. A full-service hauler takes any appliance starting in the single-item tier from $125, lifting included.
